Set up Gmail Connect

Import Gmail Connect on your XENEON EDGE and open your inbox by scanning a QR code with your phone.

Gmail Connect puts your real inbox on the XENEON EDGE touchscreen, so you can read, reply, archive and compose without touching your main screen. You import the widget in iCUE, then sign in by scanning a QR code with your phone.

Before you start

Install and sign in

Import the widget

In iCUE, go to XENEON EDGE → Widgets, press + and import the Gmail Connect .icuewidget file.

Place it on a screen area

Drag the widget onto a screen area of your EDGE. Use an L or XL slot, because the three panes need the width.

Sign in with your phone

Google won't sign anyone in on a panel like the EDGE, so your phone does it instead.

  1. The widget draws a QR code on the EDGE.
  2. Scan it and approve with Google in your phone's normal browser.
  3. The key comes back to the panel encrypted, and your inbox opens.

There's nothing to type, on the panel or in iCUE. If you'd rather not use your phone, tap Open link on the pairing screen to open the sign-in page in your PC's default browser, or open the sign-in page and enter the code printed under the QR code.

Add a second mailbox

Repeat the sign-in with another account to add a second mailbox. The badge at the top of the rail switches between them.

What it can access

Gmail Connect asks for one Google permission, gmail.modify. That lets it read your messages, change their labels, and send mail you write in the widget. It can't see your contacts, your calendar or your Drive.

The key is encrypted with a secret that exists only on the EDGE's screen and in the phone that scanned it, so nothing in between can read it, not even QAEM. After you sign in, the widget talks to Google directly from your PC over HTTPS. Your mail never passes through a QAEM server, because there isn't one.

Good to know

  • Dashboard page. An optional page, off by default. Turn it on in Settings → Look → Dashboard tab to see your mail as Unread, Starred, With attachments and Latest sections, each switchable on its own.
  • New mail. The widget checks every 30 seconds, and a banner slides in with the sender and subject.
  • Remote images are blocked by default, so senders don't learn that you opened their mail. You can turn them on in Settings.
  • Links in a message are collected into a list under it. Tapping one shows the real host and asks you to confirm, then opens it in your PC's default browser.
  • Attachments are view-only, and only images display. The EDGE has nowhere to save a file.
  • Messages you send are plain text.
  • Drafts aren't synced to Gmail. An unsent message is kept in the widget and restored after an iCUE reload, but it never becomes a Gmail draft.

Troubleshooting

The widget shows a new QR code after a restart

Cookies and storage may not survive a power cycle of the device, which is a limitation of the EDGE's web view. Scan the new code. Pairing again takes a few seconds.

The key never reached the EDGE

Pairing needs the relay between your phone and the panel to be reachable. If your phone can't hand the key over, the sign-in page shows a connection string to copy instead. Paste it into the widget's Connect screen, or into Gmail connection in iCUE's widget settings.

One of my mailboxes disappeared

If Google stops accepting a mailbox's key for good, the widget drops only that mailbox and carries on with the others. Sign in with that account again to add it back.
