This guide is about Elgato's free Discord plugin for Stream Deck, with a short section at the end on Deckord, QAEM's paid alternative. Most of the causes below apply to any plugin that controls Discord, Deckord included.
Why the plugin needs authorizing
The Discord plugin doesn't log in to Discord's servers. It talks to the Discord desktop app running on your PC, through Discord's local connection for apps. Discord only lets an app in after you approve it, which is the Authorize window. Discord then gives the plugin an access token, and Stream Deck keeps it.
So every authorization problem is one of three things: the plugin can't reach the Discord app, Discord won't show or accept the approval, or Stream Deck loses the token afterwards.
Stream Deck Discord authorization not working
The symptoms: you click Request Access and nothing happens, the Authorize window never appears, or you approve it and the key asks again. Work through these in order and test a Discord key after each one.
Update the Stream Deck app
Elgato's Stream Deck 7.3.1, released on 6 March 2026, fixed some plugins, such as Discord, not working correctly. Update the Stream Deck app, then update the Discord plugin from the Elgato Marketplace.
Open the Discord desktop app
Discord must be running and logged in, and it must be the desktop app. A Discord tab in your browser has no local connection, so the plugin can't find it. If Discord was still starting when Stream Deck loaded, give it a moment, then press a Discord key again.
Run Stream Deck and Discord the same way
Windows keeps apps running as administrator apart from normal ones. If Discord runs as administrator and Stream Deck doesn't, or the other way round, the plugin can't connect, and the Authorize window never appears.
- Right-click each app's shortcut, choose Properties → Compatibility, and clear Run this program as an administrator.
- Quit both apps from the system tray and start them again normally.
Running Stream Deck as administrator is a bad idea anyway: it gives every plugin admin rights, and plugin makers report it causing lost settings and lost sign-ins.
Request access again
- Drag any Discord action, such as Mute, onto an empty key.
- If the settings panel shows Request Access, click it.
- Switch to Discord and click Authorize.
The Authorize window often opens behind other windows. Look for Discord flashing on the taskbar.
Clear the old authorization
If Discord keeps reusing a broken authorization, remove it and start fresh. In Discord, open User Settings → Authorized Apps, remove the Stream Deck entry if there is one, then repeat the previous step.
Reinstall the plugin
Elgato's own check: does the problem continue after the plugin has been uninstalled and installed again? Remove the Discord plugin in the Stream Deck app, install it again from the Elgato Marketplace, and authorize again. Your keys may need the action dragged on again.
Check your antivirus
The plugin connects to Discord on your own PC, and some security suites block that. If the steps above didn't help, allow StreamDeck.exe in your antivirus or try with its real-time protection briefly paused.
Last resort: reset Discord's local data
When nothing else works, Stream Deck users on Reddit report that a clean Discord install stops the loop. Quit Discord, rename the %appdata%\Discord folder to Discord.old, reinstall Discord and restart the PC. You'll have to log in to Discord again, and its local settings start fresh. Keep the old folder until everything works.
Stream Deck Discord plugin not working
Authorized, but the keys do nothing or show a warning.
- Discord closed or restarted. The plugin loses its connection when Discord quits or updates itself. Wait for Discord to finish loading, then press a key.
- Pressing too fast. Elgato notes that Discord's actions are rate limited, so pressing a key many times in a row can make it stop responding for a moment.
- Another tool controlling Discord. If you also run a second Discord plugin or overlay that changes your voice settings, close it while you test.
- Only this plugin is affected? Elgato's general check: if other plugins misbehave too, the Stream Deck app itself needs updating or reinstalling, not the Discord plugin.
- A stale plugin after updating Stream Deck. If it broke right after a Stream Deck update, reinstall the plugin from the Marketplace so it matches the new version.
Discord volume mixer not working on Stream Deck
Per-user volume sets how loud each person in your call is, for you only, the same as the slider when you right-click someone in Discord.
- Join a voice channel first. The dial lists the people in your current call. Outside a call there's nobody to set, so it looks empty.
- Use a Stream Deck +. In Elgato's plugin, per-user volume is on the Stream Deck + dials, with each person's avatar and percent on the touch strip.
- Authorize again after an update. If mute works but volume doesn't, the plugin may be using an authorization from before it needed volume access. Remove it under User Settings → Authorized Apps in Discord and request access again.
- Using "Discord Volume Mixer"? That's a separate plugin from another maker on the Elgato Marketplace, Windows only. Update it, and report problems to its maker, since Elgato's fixes don't cover it.
Where Deckord helps
Elgato's plugin is free, works on Windows and macOS, and covers the essentials: mute, deafen, push-to-talk, per-user volume, the soundboard and voice channels. If it does what you need once it's working, keep it. There's a side-by-side comparison if you're deciding.
Deckord is a paid plugin by QAEM for Windows, for when you want more from the same keys and dials:
- Per-user volume up to 200%, the same percent Discord shows, on Stream Deck + dials.
- Noise suppression, echo cancellation and auto gain on keys.
- A voice channel browser on the touch strip, showing who's in each channel before you join.
- A call timer, and the soundboard.
- The same controls on a XENEON EDGE, with the Deckord Widget.
Deckord connects through a Discord application you create yourself, once, in a few minutes. Because the application is yours, your own account can always authorize it, and you can see and reset it in Discord's Developer Portal. It still needs the Discord desktop app, and it still can't connect if only one of Stream Deck and Discord runs as administrator. Set up Deckord walks through it, with its own troubleshooting.
Questions
Why does Stream Deck keep asking me to authorize Discord?
Usually Stream Deck or Discord runs as administrator and the other doesn't, the Stream Deck app is older than 7.3.1, or Discord is reusing a broken authorization. Run both normally, update, remove the old entry under Authorized Apps in Discord, and request access again.
Does the Stream Deck Discord plugin work with Discord in a browser?
No. The plugin controls the Discord desktop app on the same PC. A Discord tab in a browser can't be controlled by Stream Deck.
Why is my Stream Deck Discord volume dial empty?
You're not in a voice channel. Per-user volume lists the people in your current call, so join a channel first. In Elgato's plugin it's on the Stream Deck + dials.
Is there a free Discord plugin for Stream Deck?
Yes. Elgato's Discord plugin is free on the Elgato Marketplace, with mute, deafen, push-to-talk, per-user volume, the soundboard and voice channel keys.
Does Deckord work on a Mac?
No. Deckord is Windows only. On a Mac, use Elgato's free Discord plugin.
